The Story Behind Alexandra’s Pizza: Halifax’s Favourite Since 1991

Every great pizza place has a great story. Alexandra’s Pizza began in 1991 when founder Dimitri Neonakis opened the very first location on Queen Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

With a passion for quality food, generous portions, and genuine community spirit, Dimitri built something that quickly became far more than just a pizza shop. He created a Halifax institution.

When the first Alexandra’s Pizza opened its doors in 1991, the response from Halifax was immediate and enthusiastic. Word spread fast that this was something special: pizza made with real care, topped generously, and priced fairly.

Loyal customers began telling friends and family, and the reputation grew organically through the most powerful marketing tool there is: genuine word of mouth.

It wasn’t long before The Coast Magazine readers voted Alexandra’s Pizza “BEST IN TOWN” for their poutine. A local radio station lamented the lack of great poutine in Halifax, and was flooded with calls from Alexandra’s devotees.

That reputation, “Home of the Best Pizza and Poutine in Town,” became a slogan the team is still proud to carry today.

In 2000, Alexandra’s expanded to Cole Harbour, Dartmouth, quickly becoming the favourite of residents there too. The success of that expansion opened the door for further growth.

Today Alexandra’s Pizza operates locations throughout Halifax, Dartmouth, Fairview, Clayton Park, Hammonds Plains, Sackville, Spryfield, Sydney, and Charlottetown, PEI, with more on the way.
